Contribute to the public horticulture industry’s understanding of itself, improve the Association’s advocacy of the industry, and gain insight into how your garden performs relative to your peers.

What We’ve learned

As part of the Association’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Benchmarking data allowed us to estimate that the public horticulture industry was losing $3M per day in our government advocacy efforts. This estimate was confirmed by survey responses that showed the real number was $3.2M.

Over 121 Million people visit public gardens every year – 1 out of 6 people within a 25 mile radius visited a reporting garden.

Over 80,000 acres in North America are covered by Association member gardens and arboreta.

Over 5 million visitors received education instruction at member gardens – including over 2 million schoolchildren in grades K-5.

Over 205,000 volunteers donated over 8.7 million hours to gardens.

“Aggregate data tells the powerful story about public gardens… You can establish baseline potentials: what fundraising could be; what attendance should be; what staffing levels are appropriate.”

– Kara Newport
CEO, Filoli Center

“Benchmarking shows not only what we’re best at, but also where there’s room for improvement to help the bottom line… Without Benchmarking, it’s a lot more work for a lot more people.”
