Jessica Fegley, a graduate student at Pennsylvania State University, has been awarded the first Linda Milbourn Scholarship in Landscape Architecture. She will be working on a project with Winterthur Museum, Garden, & Library.
"I will be working with a team at Winterthur Gardens to assist them in developing a green stormwater infrastructure concept plan to address onand off-site stormwater challenges, focusing on utilizing artful rainwater design and native plant communities to the greatest extent possible.
"The site, named Duck Pond Woods, is experiencing ecological damage to its natural seep wetlands and intermittent stream due to runoff concentrated from a nearby, yet off-property, parking lot. The Winterthur team hopes to include this concept plan as a green alternative to a current, traditional infrastructure concept plan focused solely on an engineered detention basin approach."
The funds from the Linda Milbourn Fellowship will be used to cover the costs of travel to Winterthur Gardens for site visits, the materials and laboratory fees related to the collection and analysis of water samples to determine existing nutrient and sediment levels, as well as providing a stipend for continued education costs during this experiential research/design process.
The Linda Milbourn Fellowship in Landscape Architecture was introduced in 2021 to provide financial assistance for a promising student pursuing a graduate degree in landscape architecture with a distinct project at a member garden. We're indebted to an anonymous donor who established this $5,000 Fellowship at the Association to honor one of industry's visionary leaders who passed in 2019.
Graduate students of Landscape Architecture interested in applying are encouraged to begin planning their 2022-2023 projects with affiliated gardens in advance of the next application cycle which opens July 1, 2022.
